I Used ChatGPT as My Travel Agent to Plan a Family Vacation. Here's What Actually Happened.

Like many moms, I usually become the unpaid project manager of every family vacation.
I research hotels. I compare attractions. I map driving routes. I find restaurants. I create packing lists. I answer 487 questions that begin with:
"Mom, what's the plan tomorrow?"
This year, I decided to try something different.
I used ChatGPT as my assistant to help plan our family vacation.
The results were surprisingly good, occasionally frustrating, and at times downright hilarious.
The Dream
My vision was simple:
I wanted someone—or something—to help me:
Plan the itinerary
Recommend restaurants
Build a grocery list
Estimate costs
Create packing lists
Figure out attraction strategies
Help me make decisions
Basically, I wanted a travel agent, personal assistant, vacation planner, and family logistics coordinator.
For free (...technically $20/month for a ChatGPT Plus subscription).
ChatGPT was willing to apply for the job!
The Prompt That Started It All
I started with a prompt similar to this:
Sample Prompt:
"Act like an experienced travel agent. We are a family of four planning a trip to Orlando and staying at [INSERT HOTEL NAME]. Help me plan a week of activities for the family. Include a trip to Cocoa Beach, Disney parks, nearby attractions, activities at the resort, dining recommendations, and downtime. Consider crowd levels, travel logistics, and family-friendly experiences."
That simple prompt launched weeks of collaborative planning that evolved as we refined our priorities and learned more about our options.
It Helped Build a Better Vacation Rhythm
One thing ChatGPT did exceptionally well was helping optimize the flow of the trip.
Rather than simply suggesting attractions, it helped answer questions like:
Which days are best to visit specific parks?
Should we visit two major parks back-to-back?
When should we schedule a beach day?
Where should we place a pool day?
How should we structure travel days?
As we discussed crowd patterns, driving distances, weather, and energy levels, ChatGPT consistently recommended adjustments that improved the overall rhythm of the trip.
For example, it helped us:
Choose better days of the week for park visits
Insert recovery days between more demanding activities
Schedule lower-energy experiences after major park days
Plan travel days and consider travel fatigue
Looking back, this may have been one of the most valuable contributions AI made to the entire trip.
It Planned Meals Like a Champ
We stayed somewhere with a full kitchen, which meant we didn't have to eat every meal out.
So I asked ChatGPT to create a meal plan and grocery list for a family of four.
It created:
Breakfasts
Lunches
Dinners
Grocery lists
Meal prep schedules
Cooler packing lists
It even helped me create meals that reused ingredients to reduce waste and save money.
Because I wanted low-prep meals and less time spent standing over a stove, I specifically asked for slow-cooker dinners. ChatGPT adapted the menu accordingly.
Honestly, this was one of the most practical uses of AI throughout the entire planning process, and one I'll use even at home.
Restaurant Recommendations Were Surprisingly Thoughtful
One thing I noticed was that ChatGPT didn't simply recommend the most popular restaurants.
It explained why a restaurant fit our family.
For example, it recommended Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' Kitchen because it aligned with things I had already shared:
Family-friendly atmosphere
Comfort food
Good value
Convenient location
Relaxed pace
The recommendation made complete sense.
But ultimately, we chose Rainforest Cafe because we wanted something that felt a little more memorable and themed. Since so much of our trip revolved around Disney experiences, a restaurant filled with animatronic animals, thunderstorms, and jungle sounds felt more like an attraction than just another meal.
That experience taught me something important: AI recommendations are often most useful when they help you clarify what you're actually looking for.
Disney Is Where Things Got Interesting
I quickly learned something:
ChatGPT is good at Disney planning.
But Disney is better at being complicated!!
ChatGPT helped with:
Ride strategies
Lightning Lane decisions
Park planning
Crowd considerations
Transportation options
It even correctly recommended that Lightning Lane would likely be worth it for one park but probably not necessary for another based on our family's priorities.
That was genuinely helpful.
But then reality showed up.
Where ChatGPT Got It Wrong
At one point ChatGPT created a ride strategy that assumed we had Early Park Entry.
We didn't.
That one detail significantly impacted wait times and changed our entire morning strategy.
Another time it optimized our route through a park to minimize walking.
Great idea.
Except it didn't account for where our car would be parked when we were exhausted twelve hours later.
The route was technically efficient.
The end of the day was less so.
Those moments reminded me that AI can only work with the information it has—and sometimes it doesn't know what it doesn't know.
The Real Value Wasn't Planning. It Was Pivoting.
Every vacation changes.
Weather changes.
Preferences change.
Energy levels change.
Ticket options change.
Attractions break down.
Plans evolve.
Instead of starting over every time, I could ask:
"Given everything we've already discussed, what's the best option now?"
That turned out to be far more useful than the original itinerary.
For example:
We changed attraction priorities.
We changed park strategies.
We reconsidered Lightning Lane purchases.
We swapped activities.
We adjusted transportation plans.
We added a stop in Savannah on the drive down, which turned into one of the most enjoyable surprises of the trip...a walk through Savannah Plant Riverside District while eating the best pecan pralines I've EVER tasted and sipping on Georgia peach tea!

Savannah Plant Riverside District

Savannah Bee Company

River Street Sweets
One of the biggest changes we made was dropping Universal from our itinerary altogether.
Originally, we considered visiting Universal CityWalk as a way to get a taste of Universal without purchasing park tickets. But as ChatGPT helped us look at the trip as a whole, it became clear that nearly everything else we had planned revolved around Disney.
Instead of forcing another destination into the schedule, we chose Disney Springs, which fit much more naturally with the rest of the trip.
That decision led to another unexpected addition.
I had always wanted to visit Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter and try the famous Mickey-shaped beignets. ChatGPT helped us discover that we could take a boat from Disney Springs to Port Orleans, turning a simple evening into a unique Disney experience that wasn't originally on our radar.

It's a great example of how AI can help uncover experiences you didn't even know to ask about.
My Unexpected Favorite Use
Once our itinerary was finalized, I copied everything into Gamma.
If you've never used Gamma, think of it as a way to turn information into a visually appealing presentation.
I copied my entire ChatGPT itinerary into Gamma and it generated a colorful travel brochure complete with:
Daily schedules
Packing lists
Attraction plans
Driving information
Restaurant recommendations
Park strategies
Then I printed it.

For the first time in family vacation history, I was not the sole keeper of vacation knowledge!!!

Instead of hearing:
"Mom, what's tomorrow?"
they could just open the brochure.
Instead of:
"What should I pack?"
there was a packing list.
Instead of:
"Where are we going after breakfast?"
there was an agenda.
I cannot overstate how magical this was.
Honestly, creating the brochure in Gamma may have saved almost as many questions as using ChatGPT in the first place.
What I Learned From Letting ChatGPT Plan Our Vacation
After weeks of planning, revising, comparing options, and asking questions, here are my biggest takeaways:
The best itinerary isn't the one with the most activities—it's the one with the best pacing.
One of the most valuable things ChatGPT did wasn't telling us what to do. It was helping us think through when to do it.
A beach day, pool day, or relaxed evening can become much more enjoyable when it's intentionally placed between higher-energy experiences.
The best recommendation isn't always the one you choose.
ChatGPT recommended several great options throughout our planning process.
Sometimes we followed the recommendation exactly. Other times we chose something different because it better matched the experience we wanted.
The value wasn't always in the recommendation itself—it was in understanding the reasoning behind it.
AI is really good at optimizing.
Make sure it's optimizing for the right thing.
ChatGPT can create efficient routes, schedules, and strategies, but it doesn't always understand real-world nuances like where your car is parked, how tired your family will be, or whether everyone wants to power-walk across a theme park at 2 PM.
The real value wasn't planning—it was pivoting.
Plans change.
Weather changes.
Crowds change.
Family preferences change.
Having a planning partner that already knew the context of our trip made it incredibly easy to adapt as new information emerged.
ChatGPT is an amazing travel assistant, not a replacement for common sense.
The best results came when I treated ChatGPT like a very knowledgeable assistant rather than an all-knowing expert.
The combination of AI recommendations and human judgment turned out to be far more powerful than either one alone.
Final Thoughts
Using ChatGPT as a travel agent didn't replace human judgment.
It didn't eliminate planning.
And it definitely didn't understand every nuance of a complex family vacation.
But it dramatically reduced decision fatigue.
It helped me think through tradeoffs.
It helped me organize information.
It helped me create a plan.
Most importantly, it helped me spend less time researching and more time looking forward to the trip.
I'm genuinely thankful we decided to take this trip after ChatGPT became available. Planning a week-long family vacation used to require a spreadsheet, seventeen browser tabs, three notebooks, and a mild personality change.
The most valuable suggestions weren't always the ones we followed exactly.
Often, the best outcome came from using ChatGPT's recommendations as a starting point and then adapting them to fit our family's personality and priorities.
Would I use ChatGPT to plan another vacation?
Absolutely!
Would I trust it blindly?
Also, absolutely not.
The sweet spot is treating ChatGPT the way you would treat a very enthusiastic travel assistant:
Helpful.
Fast.
Creative.
Occasionally wrong.
And always available for another round of questions at 11:30 PM when you're suddenly wondering whether you really need to pack four ponchos.
Spoiler alert: you probably should!
